Academic Articles - Risky Play and Children’s Safety

An article published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health explores the balance between keeping children safe and allowing them to take risks whilst playing, and how important free play is to children’s development.

The authors present evidence that increased societal concerns about child safety coupled with less time for children to engage in unstructured play has resulted in less risk taking play, which is an important element in child development.

Essentially the article concludes that as a society we need to shift from keeping children as safe aspossible, to keeping children as safe as necessary.
