Are children given too many toys?

With Christmas approaching it’s difficult to escape the numerous adverts for new and expensive toys. After having to pack her children’s things when she was emigrating one BBC writer asks are children given too many toys?


Psychologist Oliver James suggests that in reality children only really “need” one special transitional item whereas the rest are socially generated wants.

Anyone who has witnessed a child play for hours with the cardboard box a present came in may be inclined to agree.
