Belgium divided on euthanasia for children

The Senate in Belgium have passed a draft bill to extend the right to die to terminally ill children who are in unbearable physical pain.

The country legalised euthanasia for adults in 2002 and supporters of this new bill wish for children to be allowed the same rights as adults. A supporter of the bill described it as the “ultimate gesture of humanity”, whereas a senator who voted against the bill voiced concerns that it would create a “slippery slope”. The parliament in Belgium is expected to make a final decision within the next few months.
