Fairness and friends: The foundation of good mental health at any age

In this piece Clare Allen considers what makes children happy. She enlists the help of a four year old and a six year old – asking them questions such as what makes them sad and what sort of things do they worry about?

After hearing about wave machines and recently acquired stretchy toys, she concludes that it’s two basic conditions that contribute to happiness.  Allen suggests that what we all need to be happy – at any age - is to have friends and to live in a world that is fair.
