Children of older men at greater risk of mental illness, study suggests

Recent research carried out by Indiana University and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm examined the medical and educational records of 2.6 million babies born between 1973 and 2001. When researchers compared the performance of siblings in the same family they found that children with fathers over the age of 45 were 3.5 times more likely to have autism, had more than twice the risk of psychiatric disorder and a 13-fold greater risk of ADHD.

Other researchers have queried the findings as they state other variables, such as birth order, could contribute to these findings and therefore it is not possible to establish a direct causal link.
