Vulnerable children and their carers are being let down by Scotland’s politicians

Part of the recent Children and Young People (Scotland) bill was to introduce a new legal status called a kinship care order which the Government claims will recognise kinship carers in law and increase the support carers are offered. Closer inspection of the bill has left many people concerned as this status will reduce the number of kinship children who are deemed “at risk” or “looked after”, resulting in less access to crucial services and financial support for individual families.

The financial memorandum of the bill indicates that only a fraction of kinship carers will be entitled to start-ups grants – meaning many will not receive money to cover the legal cost of applying for an order or a basic allowance.
