The need for "wild" play: Let children be the animals they need to be

Evolutionary biologist Marc Bekoff argues that free play, including risk-taking, is essential to enhance deep biological processes in order to function optimally. He believes that play can increase the versatility of movements, the capacity to recover from sudden shocks and the ability to cope emotionally with unexpected situations.
