Te Ara Diverse Families

In Māori ‘Te ara’ means ‘the pathway’. Te Ara: The Encyclopedia of New Zealand project tries to connect pathways of information, ways of living and stories from people all over New Zealand. Their section on diverse families focuses on the changing nature of the traditional nuclear family. They also examine how certain groups define what ‘family’ is – finding that in general  Māori whānau report a strong connection to people of several generations, even when they do not reside in the same home.
