Minister pledges overhaul of 'shameful' child protection rules after Rochdale 'watershed'

Edward Timpson, the Minister for Children and Young People in England, has this week announced plans to review the procedures implemented in children’s homes – in particular the placement of children in homes out with the local authority area of their case worker and the recording of children who go missing from care. This is in light of the recent NSPCC report that estimated 7,885 children went missing from care last year in England and Wales (much higher than the Government reported statistic of around 1,000). It will be interesting to see if changes come about as result of the consultation, and if Scotland will initiate similar investigations into the care system here.
