Fourfold rise in children who need extra support

It was recently reported that in the past 10 years there has been a fourfold increase in children diagnosed with additional support needs, such as ADHD, autism and learning difficulties. In 2002 the recorded number of children needing extra support in school was around 29,000, which increased to 118,034 last year.

There are a number of possible factors which could have contributed to the larger number of cases, such as a general greater awareness of the conditions and wider diagnostic criteria – however further investigation into the dramatic increase is required.
