Police retain DNA from thousands of children

According to figures released by the Howard League for Penal Reform this week (http://www.howardleague.org/police-and-dna-samples/) the DNA of 123,769 children have been taken in England and Wales in the past two years.

Similar figures for Scotland have not been released. However the Scottish Government website confirms that the DNA of children 8 years and over who have been charged with certain offences and referred to the children’s hearing system can be taken and retained on the database. This adds to a worrying trend of criminalising children and raises questions about the right to future privacy.
