Commission on women offenders

This research from the Scottish Government provides an overview of women in prison in Scotland. In part 2 of the report it is stated that 80% of female prisoners in Corton Vale have mental health issues and that women prisoners are almost 10 times more likely to self-harm than male prisoners.

The prisoners that lived in Glasgow at the time of arrest make up the largest proportion of prisoners from any local authority in Scotland. A convincing case is put forward that Scotland needs a different response to working with women:
