US probes use of antipsychotic drugs on children

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that federal health officials in America have launched an investigation into the use of antipsychotic drugs on children.

Statistics from 2008 show that 19,045 children under the age of 5 were prescribed antipsychotics through Medicaid – with 482 of these under 3 and 107 under the age of 2. There are doctors quoted in the article that say trauma focused therapy would be far more effective at treating the type of problems these medications are being prescribed for.

This highlights a worrying trend, both in the US and the UK, of increased reliance on prescription drugs to treat children with behavioural issues.
