Syria’s traumatised children: a national security concern

As a result of the war in Syria more than two million children have been displaced inside the country and a further one million have fled elsewhere as refugees. This article looks at the social and emotional consequences of the war. Children everywhere need safety, their basic physiological needs to be fulfilled, family and connections and education in order to grow into healthy adults.

Trauma expert Richard Mollica states that the humiliation and degradation of people in Syria is a national security issue and that US authorities need to prioritise the emotional well-being of Syria’s children as a matter of urgency.
